The knock on her door made Grace wince. She pulled the duvet over her head. Bits and pieces of the night before flew through her memory. They’d eaten the casserole, they’d drunk more wine. They’d talked and laughed, and Sam had held her hand and kissed her fingers, and all those things that made butterflies fly around in her stomach.

And their kiss…

She wanted him to come to bed with her. He’d refused, saying she was drunk, or “legless” as he put it. While she hadn’t felt drunk at the time, now she acknowledged she had to have been. She really needed to stop drinking wine. It obviously didn’t agree with her.

The insistent knocking again.

“What is it?” she grumbled, her throat scratching.

“You said I could take you out today.” Sam’s too-cheery voice cut through the door.

She slit her eyes open enough to see the time on the alarm clock beside her bed. “It’s only nine thirty. I need some more sleep. Go away.”

“You can sleep in the car.”

Car? “Where are we going?”

“It’s a surprise.”

“I already told you I hate surprises.” This stupid conversation was waking her up, and what she really wanted to do was go back to sleep.

“You sure did.”

His fake American accent almost made her smile. Almost. She rolled over and covered her head.

The sadist knocked again.

“Ugh.” She threw off the covers and padded to the door, realizing she was wearing the same clothes from the night before. Yuck. Note to self: remember to strip before falling into bed.

She opened the door, her withering glare at the ready. “What?”

With an annoyingly cheerful smile on his face, and his aura swirling its forest green self around him, he thrust a cup of coffee at her. “Here you go. You have enough time to shower before we leave.”

The blue of his polo-style shirt highlighted the warm color of his skin at his throat, and she had the sudden urge to step forward and inhale his icy scent. “To where?” She snatched the mug from him.

“I told you it was a surprise.”

She had the urge to growl. Instead, she took a sip of coffee. One swallow and some of the tension eased from her brain. “And I told you—”

He shut her up with a kiss. She was so startled, she froze. He was kissing her with her morning breath, her hair probably going in every direction, and the clothes she wore yesterday on her unwashed body.

Before she had a chance to react, he stepped back and walked down the hallway to the kitchen. “Hurry, now,” he said over his shoulder.

She blinked, her lips tingling and her body thrumming with pleasure. What just happened? Why in the world did he think it was okay to wake her up this early with a hangover, to kiss her like that, then walk away before she could respond properly?

Oh, right. Because they’d decided they were dating and he was going to take her out today.

Sighing, she grabbed her towel off the back of the door and took her coffee with her to the bathroom.
